Dyson makes purifier fans in three hoop-top styles: Cool, Hot+Cool (with a heater) and Humidify+Cool, plus the larger Big+Quiet line. A listing should name the model code, since the code tells you whether it has a formaldehyde filter. Most models offer app and voice control, but check the listing for the model you want.
Reading the model codes
| Type | Base | Formaldehyde filter |
|---|---|---|
| Cool | TP10 | TP09 |
| Hot+Cool | HP10 | HP09 |
| Humidify+Cool | PH03 | PH04 |
| Big+Quiet | n/a | BP04 |
The BP04 also adds extra media for nitrogen dioxide.
Hoop-top machines move about 100 CFM of purified air, and the Big+Quiet models about 200 CFM, per one tester’s measurements.

Filters are part of the cost
Each machine uses a HEPA filter for particles and a carbon filter for gases. Both filter types need replacing in time; check which filter the model takes. One review notes that Big+Quiet HEPA filters run on a five-year cycle and carbon filters on two. The formaldehyde catalytic filter is described as permanent.
Choose the type by room
Pick Cool for year-round use, Hot+Cool if a heater in the room helps in winter, and Humidify+Cool for dry air. Big+Quiet suits a large room. A purifier does not replace ventilation: for a formaldehyde source, remove the source first.

Frequently asked questions
Which Dyson purifiers handle formaldehyde?
The TP09, HP09 and PH04 add a catalytic filter that targets formaldehyde. The base models (TP10, HP10, PH03) do not.
Do Dyson purifiers need new filters?
Yes. They use a HEPA filter for particles and a carbon filter for gases, and both wear out. Replacement cost varies by model, so check it before buying.
