The North Face makes three main kinds of jacket: waterproof rain shells such as the Antora, insulated jackets in synthetic ThermoBall or down such as the Nuptse, and fleece such as the Denali. For Black Friday 2026, match the type to your weather first, then compare style names and sizes in each listing.
Three jobs, three kinds of jacket
A rain shell keeps water out and adds little warmth. An insulated jacket keeps you warm and may only shrug off light rain. A fleece is warm, breathable and quick to dry, but wind and rain get through it more easily. Many people end up with a shell plus one warm layer, since the two can be worn together on the worst days.
The North Face jackets to compare
Decide what the jacket is for first: rain, cold or a mid layer. Then match the style name on the tag and check the size chart the seller uses.

Rain shells: the Antora
The Antora is The North Face’s everyday rain jacket. It uses a two-layer, 70-denier DryVent waterproof shell with a DWR finish made without PFCs. It has an adjustable hood but no pit zips, and it breathes less than technical shells, so it suits walking around town and commuting more than steep hiking. It does not pack into its own pocket. A size that leaves room for a fleece underneath gives you a winter option too.
Insulated: ThermoBall or down
The ThermoBall Eco jacket uses synthetic insulation made from PrimaLoft fibers shaped to work like clusters of down. Its main advantage is that it keeps insulating when it gets wet. The Eco version is made from fully recycled materials, weighs about 18 oz, and works as either a mid layer or an outer layer.
Down is the warmer choice for its bulk. The 1996 Retro Nuptse uses 700-fill down with a water-resistant shell and a stowable hood. It is built for cold, dry days and is a bigger, boxier jacket than the ThermoBall. The Nuptse page covers its fit and the vest version.
Fleece as a jacket
The Retro Denali is a heavyweight fleece made from fully recycled polyester, with nylon panels on the chest, shoulders and elbows that cut wind and resist wear. It has four pockets and a short, relaxed fit with a drawcord hem. Some versions zip into matching North Face shells. Lighter fleece such as the Glacier is covered on the fleece page.

What to look at in a jacket listing
Start with the style name on the inside label, not just “North Face jacket” in the title. Then confirm men’s, women’s or kids’ sizing, since the same name often covers all three. For rain shells, check the seam tape inside for peeling. For insulated jackets, look for flat spots in the photos. With any used piece, ask how it was washed, and check the seller’s return window before you commit to a size.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Antora jacket waterproof?
Yes. The Antora uses a two-layer DryVent waterproof shell. It has no pit zips and breathes less than technical shells, so it suits commuting and casual wear more than hiking uphill.
Down or synthetic: which North Face insulated jacket should I pick?
Down, as in the Nuptse, gives more warmth for its bulk but loses loft when soaked. Synthetic ThermoBall keeps insulating when wet and works as a mid or outer layer.
