The Garmin Forerunner for Black Friday 2026 is easiest to pick by model number: the 900s are the triathlon flagships, the 500s and 200s are the training middle, and the 100s and below suit newer runners. The newest are the 570 and 970 from 2025 and the 70 and 170 from 2026. Then check screen type and case size.
How the model numbers line up
The line started in 2003, and Garmin keeps the hundreds digit as a rough tier. Here are the current and recent models with their launch years:
- Forerunner 970 (2025): 47 mm only, with an LED flashlight, full-color maps, a sapphire lens and a titanium bezel. Up to 15 days in smartwatch mode.
- Forerunner 965 (2023): 47 mm with a 1.4-inch screen, built-in full-color maps and a titanium bezel. Up to 23 days in smartwatch mode.
- Forerunner 570 (2025): 42 mm or 47 mm, aluminum bezel, music storage and a speaker and microphone. Up to 11 days.
- Forerunner 265 and 265S (2023): 46 mm and 42 mm. The smaller 265S lasts longer, up to 15 days against 13.
- Forerunner 165 and 165 Music (2024): a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, Garmin Pay and up to 11 days.
- Forerunner 70 and 170 (2026): the newest entry models, with a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen.
- Forerunner 55 (2021): an older entry model from before AMOLED reached the line.

AMOLED or the older screen
The Forerunner 265 and 965 were the first in the line with AMOLED screens, and every Forerunner announced since has one. Garmin calls the 570 and 970 screens its brightest AMOLED to date. Models from before 2023, such as the 55, do not have AMOLED, and the product page names the screen they use. If you want the bright, colorful look, stick to 2023 and later.
Music, payments and calls
Music storage, Garmin Pay and a speaker for calls are spread unevenly across the Forerunner range. The Forerunner 165 has Garmin Pay on every version, but only the 165 Music stores songs. The 570 and 970 both have a built-in speaker and microphone, and the 570 stores music. On older or entry models, check the product page before assuming any of these are included.

Start with the full name, because “Forerunner 265” and “265S” are different sizes and “165” and “165 Music” differ in storage. Next, look at the year or generation if the seller lists it, since a 965 and a 970 look alike in photos. Then confirm the charging cable is in the box. On a used watch, ask about the screen and lens condition and battery health, and make sure the seller has removed the watch from their Garmin account.
