Garmin for Black Friday 2026 means picking one of five watch lines first: Forerunner for running, fēnix for premium multisport and outdoor use, Instinct for a rugged build, and Venu or vívoactive for everyday health tracking with smartwatch features. Each line has its own pages below with the models, sizes and listing checks to compare.

Who makes Garmin watches

Garmin started in October 1989 as ProNav in Lenexa, Kansas, and grew from GPS navigation into fitness and outdoor wearables. Its operational headquarters is in Olathe, Kansas, and the company has been incorporated in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, since 2010. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange as GRMN. The first Forerunner arrived in 2003 and the first fēnix in 2012.

Garmin styles two of its line names in lower case with accents, fēnix and vívoactive, and listings often spell them “Fenix” and “Vivoactive”. Both spellings point to the same watches.

Screens and power: the choice that runs through every line

Most Garmin lines now come in at least one AMOLED version. The Forerunner 265 and 965 in 2023 were the first Forerunners with AMOLED screens, and the fēnix 8 and Instinct 3 both offer AMOLED next to Solar models. Solar versions use an always-on memory-in-pixel screen with a charging lens, which favors battery life over brightness. The model name or the listing title usually says which one it is, so read it before comparing anything else.

Case size is the second split. Many models come in two or three sizes, measured in millimeters across the case, and a bigger case usually holds a bigger battery.

Before you buy any Garmin watch

A few checks apply to every line:

  1. Match the full model name, including suffixes such as S, X, Pro, Solar or Music. They change size, screen and features.
  2. Confirm the case size in millimeters, not only the band color.
  3. Look for whether the charging cable is included, and the condition of the screen and lens on a used or refurbished watch.
  4. Check that the watch is the version for your region if you plan to use features such as Garmin Pay or LTE.

Frequently asked questions

Which Garmin watch line is made for running?

The Forerunner line. It started in 2003 and runs from entry models for new runners up to the Forerunner 970 for triathlon training. The fēnix and Instinct also track runs, but they are built around outdoor and rugged use.

What is the difference between AMOLED and Solar on a Garmin watch?

AMOLED screens are bright and colorful. Solar versions use a memory-in-pixel screen that stays on all the time and a lens that charges the battery in sunlight, which stretches time between charges. The fēnix 8 and Instinct 3 come in both types.
