iRobot makes the Roomba robot vacuum and its Combo vacuum and mop robots. For Black Friday 2026, start with the job you need done (vacuum only, or vacuum and mop) and whether you want a base that empties the robot. Then read the full model name, because older j series robots and newer numbered models sell side by side.

The company behind Roomba

iRobot was founded in 1990 by three members of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Lab and is based in Bedford, Massachusetts. It unveiled the first Roomba in September 2002. A planned sale to Amazon ended in January 2024 after antitrust opposition.

In December 2025 iRobot filed for Chapter 11, and on January 23, 2026 it completed a sale to Picea, its main contract manufacturer and secured lender. iRobot is now privately held and wholly owned by Picea. As part of the restructuring it set up a separate US subsidiary to look after US customer data.

How the model names work

Roomba names have changed over the years. Older robots use a letter series (i, s, j) and a plus sign when the self-emptying Clean Base is in the box. Newer robots use a number and spell out the dock, such as Roomba Max 715 Vacuum Robot + AutoEmpty Dock.

The July 2026 line-up for North America has five robots:

Model Type Dock named in the title
Roomba Max 775 Combo Vacuum and mop AutoWash Dock
Roomba Max 715 Vacuum only AutoEmpty Dock
Roomba Plus 575 Combo Vacuum and mop AutoWash Dock
Roomba Plus 515 Combo Vacuum and mop AutoWash Dock
Roomba Plus 415 Combo Vacuum and mop AutoWash Dock

The same announcement added the Roomba Electro Plus, a cordless hard floor cleaner you push yourself, so not every 2026 Roomba is a robot.

Pick a product

  • Roomba Combo robots: the vacuum and mop models, from the Combo j7+ to the Max Combo robots with a roller mop.
  • Self-emptying Roombas: what the plus sign means, the different docks and which bags they take.
  • Roomba j series: the j7, j9+ and Combo j models from 2021 to 2023, and what to check on an older robot.

Before you compare listings

A model name with and without its dock describes two different products, so check that the dock in the photos matches the title. Older robots often turn up refurbished, so read the condition, the seller’s returns policy and whether a warranty is included. Bags, brushes and mop pads differ between generations, so note the exact model before buying spares.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns iRobot now?

Picea, the company that already made Roomba robots for iRobot and was its secured lender. Picea acquired all of iRobot's equity through a court-supervised Chapter 11 process that closed on January 23, 2026. iRobot is now a private company.

What does the plus sign in a Roomba name mean?

On older models such as the i7+, s9+ and j7+, the plus sign means the box includes the Clean Base, the dock that empties the robot's bin on its own. Newer models spell out the dock in the name instead, such as AutoEmpty Dock or AutoWash Dock.

Are the j series Roombas still current?

No. The j7 dates from 2021 and the j9+ from 2023. iRobot launched new robots in 2025 and announced a newer numbered generation, such as the Max 775 Combo, in July 2026.
