Nespresso sells two capsule systems, Vertuo and Original, and a machine only takes the capsules made for its own system. For Black Friday 2026, decide first which system you want: Vertuo brews coffee in several cup sizes up to a large mug, while Original focuses on espresso and lungo. Milk frothers work with either.
A Swiss coffee brand owned by Nestlé
Nespresso is an operating unit of Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland. Its capsule system reached home kitchens in 1986. The machines carry partner names, Breville and De’Longhi among them, so the same Nespresso model can appear under more than one maker.
Patents on Original capsules began to expire in 2012, so you will also find compatible capsules from other coffee brands for Original machines.
Vertuo or Original: the one choice that matters
| Point to check | Vertuo | Original |
|---|---|---|
| Capsule | Larger, with a barcode on the rim | Smaller, no barcode |
| How it brews | Spins the capsule (Centrifusion) | Pressure brewing, like espresso |
| Cup sizes | Espresso up to a large mug or carafe, by model | Espresso and lungo |
| Other brands’ capsules | Check the box says Vertuo | Many coffee brands make them |
Vertuo arrived in the US and Canada in February 2014. The machine reads the barcode on each capsule and sets the cup size and brew for you. Original machines are simpler and suit people who mostly drink espresso or add milk.
For milk drinks, you have two routes on either system. Some machines froth milk themselves, such as the Vertuo Lattissima or the Creatista Plus with its steam wand. Others brew coffee only and pair with a separate Aeroccino frother, often sold in a bundle with the machine.
Pick a product
- Nespresso Vertuo machines: the Pop+, Next, VertuoPlus and Vertuo Lattissima, with their cup sizes.
- Nespresso Original machines: the Essenza Mini, CitiZ, Lattissima and Creatista for espresso drinkers.
- Nespresso milk frothers: the Aeroccino3, Aeroccino4 and Barista for hot and cold foam.
Reading a Nespresso listing
Find the word Vertuo or Original in the title or the model details before anything else. A listing that only says “Nespresso machine” could be either. Check the model code against the maker’s page, since a Breville and a De’Longhi version of one machine have different codes. Confirm the voltage is 120V for US outlets. Finally, see whether a frother or a capsule box is included.
Frequently asked questions
Can Vertuo capsules go in an Original Nespresso machine?
No. Vertuo capsules are a different shape and carry a barcode that Vertuo machines read, and they cannot be used in Original machines. Original capsules do not fit Vertuo machines either.
Who makes Nespresso machines?
Nespresso designs the system, and the machines are sold under partner names such as Breville, De'Longhi and Krups. The capsule system is the same whichever name is on the box.
