The Powerbeats Pro 2, released in February 2025, add noise cancelling, heart rate sensors and a smaller case with wireless charging to the ear hook design of the 2019 original. For Black Friday 2026, check which generation a listing names, since the two look alike at a glance and differ a great deal.
What the Powerbeats Pro 2 changed
The original Powerbeats Pro arrived in May 2019 with Apple’s H1 chip and a Lightning cable in the box. Beats rated them for up to 9 hours per earbud and more than 24 hours with the case.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 moved to the H2 chip, which brings active noise cancelling and a Transparency mode. Battery rose to 10 hours in the earbuds and up to 45 hours with the case, even though the case is about a third smaller. That case charges over USB-C or on a Qi pad.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Generation in the title | Only the Pro 2 has noise cancelling and heart rate sensors |
| Cable in the box | USB-C suggests the Pro 2; Lightning suggests the original |
| Case shape and size | The Pro 2 case is noticeably smaller |
| Color name | The two generations launched in different color sets |

Ear hooks and workout fit
The ear hook is the reason most people pick Powerbeats over smaller earbuds. It wraps over the top of the ear and keeps each bud in place during runs and gym sessions. On the Pro 2 the hook is half the size it was before and reinforced with a nickel-titanium alloy, and the earbuds weigh about a fifth less.
The Pro 2 box also includes five ear tip sizes, from XS to XL. A good seal matters for noise cancelling as much as for comfort. The Pro 2 carry an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, so they handle a sweaty session, not a swim.
Heart rate on your wrist or in your ears
The Pro 2 were the first Apple audio product with heart rate monitoring. LED optical sensors pulse more than 100 times a second to read blood flow, and both earbuds need to be in your ears for it to work. The data syncs to Apple Health and works with apps such as Nike Run Club and Peloton.
On an iPhone, monitoring starts with a workout in a compatible app. On Android, you switch it on yourself through the Beats app. If you also wear an Apple Watch, apps use the watch’s reading by default. More on the rest of the range sits on the Beats Black Friday hub, and if you would rather have over-ear sound, see the Beats Studio Pro.
Colors by generation
The original launched in Ivory, Moss, Navy and Black. The Pro 2 launched in Jet Black, Quick Sand, Hyper Purple and Electric Orange. A color that belongs to the other set is a quick sign the title names the wrong model.
